The Billy Goat Is Not The Real Chicago Cubs Curse
The Chicago Cubs are cursed, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. But it's not what you might think. Baseball fans know all about the alleged Billy Goat curse that is preventing the Cubbies from winning a World Series. This is so far fetched, though I do like the fact that we are blaming goats for failures instead of human beings. That said, the real curse is actually the Chicago Cubs themselves and their inability to put together a front office of competent decision makers.
The biggest problem with the Chicago Cubs throughout the years is failing to fire Jim Hendry and other failed General Managers at the right times. Hendry has done nothing but spend money on overrated players at the end of their prime years. The minor league system has been void of top-notch prospects his entire miserable tenure with the Cubs. His scouts couldn't find a decent polish sausage in Chicago, let alone a quality prospect.
I am a lifelong fan of this team, but I get tired of hearing about all these wacky Chicago Cubs curses. Instead of spending money on overrated players, why not spend money on hiring a General Manager that understands the importance of fundamentals, a quality closer, and not overpaying to get players headed for the downturn in their careers? To me, this makes sense because it is logical. To the Cubbies, it is nonsense and they will have nothing to do with anything that involves the word "logical"- unless it is used in the sentence "that was not a logical decision but I agree with it".
It is time to stop blaming the Billy Goat curse and Steve Bartman, and start admitting that the real Chicago Cubs curse is the organization itself showing no ability to hire competent front office personnel. On that note: please fire Jim Hendry and make me proud to be a Cubs fan again.
