The Buffalo Bills - The First Decade

The Buffalo Bills came into professional football in 1960 as part of the newly formed American Football League, or AFL The Bills were established by owner Ralph Wilson, Jr. who would go on to own the team from 1960 until well into his 90's. The city of Buffalo had experience with a number of professional football teams before, including a previous incarnation of the Bills in the All American Football Conference, and was hungry for a professional football team. The AFL and this new Bills team was exactly what they wanted, and what a treat it would be. The Bills, like many new franchises, stumbled out of the gates. They finished their first season with a record of 5-8-1, improving to 6-8 in their second year. It didn't take long for them to post a winning record though as they jumped to 7-6-1 in both 1962 and 1963. In fact that 1963 team made it to the playoffs, only to lose in the first round to the Boston Patriots by the score of 26-8. 1964 saw everything come together for ...

The Awesome Players In The Buffalo Bills Wall Of Fame

The Buffalo Bills came into professional football as a founding member of the American Football League in 1960. The team has had up and down years since then, but have also really made their mark on the NFL. The team has also spent its entire existence in the city of Buffalo and has developed an impressive fan following. Over the years, the Bills have been involved in some big games. They have also had a part in a number of the great moments that have made the NFL what it is today. One thing is behind the great moments that the Bills have been involved in and that is the exceptional players that have worn the Buffalo jersey. Like many other franchises, the  Buffalo Bills  honor their best players by publicly recognizing their play. In the Bills case, they have a wall of fame. Here is a list of players and other people who have been immortalized in the Buffalo Bills Wall of Fame and the years they were inducted: O.J. Simpson - 1980 Jack Kemp - 1984 Patrick J. McGroder -...

How Buffalo Bill Cody Tried to Save Sitting Bull's Life

Probably no two people during the history of America's Old West lived any more true-life adventures - nor spun as many decidedly tall tales! - as William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody and the Lakotah Warrior Chief Sitting Bull. What many probably don't know is that the two men became friends during the Indian leader's last years, thanks to the old warrior's short but flamboyant career as a member of Cody's "Wild West" traveling roadshow in 1885. (Although he was given star billing almost as prominent as Cody's billing, and paid something like $50 a week for simply riding around the arena on horseback at the beginning of each "Wild West" performance, Sitting Bull only stayed with the show for one season or about four months.) In his 2000 biography of Cody, " Buffalo Bill  Cody: The Man Behind the Legend," historian Robert A. Carter discusses the warm feelings and respect the old scout had for the Lakotah leader. Carter includes ...

Facts About Buffalo Bill

William Frederick is the man known as Buffalo Bill. He was able to get this name right after he undertook a contract in order to supply the Pacific Railroad workers with buffalo meat. However, his nickname was originally referred to a bill Com stock. He was also able to serve the Civil war as a strong soldier and was the Chief of Scout for the Third Cavalry. He was able to work in different jobs, like being a bull whacker, trapper, a wagon master and even he became the stagecoach driver in a certain establishment. With his many undertakings he was able to have the title world famous for his Wild West Shows. William F. Cody was born in 1846, and he was able experience the Old West to its full potential. His skills being a buffalo hunter made him to be recognized as the "Buffalo Bill". He had traveled in the world wide which leaves long lasting visions for the American West. With his wild West Shows, they were able to show the different Buffalo Outfits, bull's bow and arr...

Annie Oakley, Lillian Smith and Buffalo Bill's Wild West

Buffalo Bill's Wild West During the latter part of the 1800's there may not have been anything quite as popular as reenactments of the wild west and in particular the performances put on by Buffalo Bill Cody and his Wild West. Cody beyond a doubt had a knack for knowing what the public wanted to see. He was also a man who lived the wild west life and had the relationships to recruit the people who could make his dreams and that f the public come to life. One of the things that made Buffalo Bill's Wild West different from most any other form of late 1800's entertainment was the fact that his performers in most instances were not actors. They were the genuine article. At one point in the middle 1880's, Cody persuaded the great Lakota Sioux Chief Sitting Bull to join his traveling show. Although Sitting Bull only toured with the show some four months he was extremely popular and earned about $50 per week. The Sioux chief also made quite a lot of money during this ...

Biggest Wins in Next Four 2007 Bowl Games Belong to East Carolina and Texas - Part 2

Here are the next 4 winners of this year's 2007 college football bowl game results: Las Vegas Bowl - Brigham Young Nips UCLA 17-16 on a Blocked Field Goal Brigham Young, which led UCLA 17-13 at the half and went scoreless in the second half, barely managed to hang on to win 17-16 against UCLA in a game the Cougars should have lost. After allowing the Bruins a 4th quarter field goal to make it 17-16, BYU's defense went into the dumper behind K-Mart by allowing UCLA to drive 87 yards in the last 2 minutes to give the Bruins a chip-shot field goal on the final play of the game. Unfortunately for UCLA and fortunately for Brigham Young , a 280-pound Cougar lineman-Eathyn Manumaleuna (I think his last name is Hawaiian and 6 syllables)-who could not jump out of paper sack, got his right mitt up and became an instant hero. He will go into the BYU folklore history if he is not already there. The win was the 10th straight for the Cougars who finished the season at 11-2, not too...

College Football Week 1 - Brigham Young, Boise State, Alabama and Oklahoma State Are Huge Winners

(Editor's Note: All of the team rankings for this opening article are based on the Top 25 Preseason Coaches' Poll, and the Sagarin Ratings, Jeff Sagarin's factual, mathematical ratings among competition between all 245 Division 1 teams. There are 120 Division 1-A teams (also known as FBS - Football Bowl Subdivision - teams), and 125 Division 1-AA teams (also known as FCS - Football Championship Subdivision teams). Why the NCAA had to make referring to 1-A and 1-AA teams more complicated is beyond me; let's just say it was really unnecessary and leave it at that.) Brigham Young , Boise State, Alabama and Oklahoma State were college football's biggest winners in the opening week of the NCAA season. No. 20-ranked Brigham Young (BYU) used a late 4th quarter touchdown to upset No. 3-ranked Oklahoma, 14-13, and all but obliterated Oklahoma's hopes for a dream season. The Sooners, who lost to Florida 24-14 in last year's National Championship Game, returned the...

Steve Young - USFL Pro Football Career and Brigham Young University (BYU) Cougars Football Career

Steve Young is a very accomplished athlete who has extended his relevance in the game football by making a career out of being a popular on air television personality for the ESPN network. While a younger generation of football fans may be most familiar with Young for his current work as a commentator on ESPN Monday Night Football post game shows fans old enough to remember his playing days know that he was truly something special on the gridiron. Long before Steve Young became a Super Bowl MVP in 1995 with the San Francisco 49ers of the NFL he was a prominent player for the Brigham Young University (BYU) Cougars and later a poster boy for the upstart USFL spearheaded by Donald Trump to compete with the NFL. After being dubbed a high school athletic prodigy out of Greenwich High School in Greenwich, Connecticut Steve Young, a three sport star in high school (football, basketball, and baseball), moved across the country to continue his football career at Brigham Young University (BYU...

2008 Las Vegas Bowl - No 17-Ranked Brigham Young Gets Upset by Unranked Arizona, 31-21

The unranked Arizona Wildcats and their head coach Mike Stoops never made the AP Top 25 Poll during the 15-week regular season, but showed how overranked No. 17 Brigham Young University was by beating the Cougars 31-21 in the Las Vegas Bowl. Brigham Young University wanted to strut its stuff at the expense of Arizona but came up sucking pond water in Louisiana. After getting whipped by Arizona Saturday (12-20-08), the Cougars finished the year at 10-3 while the Wildcats ended their campaign at 8-5. There is a real significance to Brigham Young University's only 3 losses, and it is this: the Cougars got beat by the only 3 decent teams they played all year. After waltzing through 6 straight wins and rising to No. 8 in the AP Poll, the Cougars traveled to TCU and got crushed 32-7. After 4 more wins against weak opponents on an easy schedule, they ran smack into the Utah and got burned 48-24. Both Utah and TCU are from the same Mountain West Conference as Brigham Young Universit...

Chicago Cubs, Kentucky Derby and Dallas Mavericks Tickets are Hard to Get!

If you are a baseball, horse racing, or basketball fan, you know just how hard tickets can be to get. Scoring tickets to the Chicago Cubs, Kentucky Derby, or Dallas Mavericks can call for a small miracle, a ton of cash paid to an illegal ticket scalper, or a whole lot of luck. Generally, the ubiquitous ticket sales outlet sell out of tickets before you can ever even get through to them to purchase the tickets for the upcoming event you want to attend. This leaves you with two options for buying your hard to find tickets - eBay or a ticket seller. While eBay is fine if you want to buy collectibles and stuff like that, you can easily get scammed on ticket purchases. With eBay you will have zero protection if the event is canceled or the tickets are not genuine. If you are looking for tickets which are no longer available at the box office, you will want to find a reliable ticket seller. If you do a search online, you will find literally thousands of ticket sellers out there. How do...

Purchase Chicago Cub Tickets and Event Tickets from Reputable Sellers

There are many, many ticket brokers online for purchasing premium seating tickets. It can be difficult to know where to go to purchase your tickets. You have worked hard for your money. It would not only be disappointing to be scammed but to also miss a great event. One popular place to purchase from ticket brokers is on the auction sites on the Internet. You can find Chicago Cube tickets, Kentucky Derby tickets, Dallas Maverick tickets and more. There is one problem though with these auction sites. Let's say that you purchase Chicago Cub tickets and bad weather causes a cancellation of the game. You will not be refunded your ticket prices. Your money was just washed down the drain with the tickets. Reputable sellers will offer a refund in the case that your event is not held for any reason. The National Association of Ticket Brokers is set up to help protect the consumer. It is important to find a company online that will provide you event tickets, such as the Kentucky Derby ...

The Lovable Losers - Chicago Cubs Are on the Way of Rising

If you are a MLB fan, you must know the lovable losers -- Chicago Cubs. It is a professional baseball team from Illinois and is one of the members of the National League. Why have they been called the lovable losers? That is because they haven't been able to strike any championship win in the past 102 years. This is the longest continuous losing time for any team in the national circle. The North Siders, The Cubbies and The Boys in Blue are also titles generated by fans for this team. Like any other Cubbies season, there was no sign of improvement in the Chicago Cubs  ranks and their game play in the fourth season of 2010. So they carried on their legacy of playing for losing, which negatively impacted the overall team spirit. It will be a tough game for the Chicago Cubs to versus the Hard hitting strength was the major component of The Cardinals, so they will be focusing on it when they compete with the Chicago Cubs. Tom Gorzelanny might come out as a match winner for the card...

Make That Las Vegas Bet Today - The Chicago Cubs Will Win the World Series in 2008!

Can you imagine how long ago 1908 is? At that time, federal spending amounted to $0.66 billion and unemployment stood at 8.0%. The cost of a first-class stamp was $0.02. In 1908, the Chicago Cubs did not even have a home yet at Wrigley Field. They played the 1908 World Series at West Side Park which was located on a small block bounded by Congress, Loomis, Harrison and Throop Streets. Better yet, the Cubs at that time even had a different name. They were then known as the White Stockings. However, that was then and this is now and 2008 is shaping up to be a historical ride in the baseball world. As of this writing, the Cubs are 76-48 with a 5 game lead over Milwaukee. From June 2nd, 2007 through June 16th, 2008, the Cubs have posted a record of 108-71 (.603 winning percentage). This is the best record in baseball over that span. In 2008, the Cubs lead in most major league baseball statistics. The Chicago Cubs are first in the NL in runs. Their rotation has the best ERA in the league...

The Billy Goat Is Not The Real Chicago Cubs Curse

The Chicago Cubs are cursed, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. But it's not what you might think. Baseball fans know all about the alleged Billy Goat curse that is preventing the Cubbies from winning a World Series. This is so far fetched, though I do like the fact that we are blaming goats for failures instead of human beings. That said, the real curse is actually the Chicago Cubs themselves and their inability to put together a front office of competent decision makers. The biggest problem with the Chicago Cubs  throughout the years is failing to fire Jim Hendry and other failed General Managers at the right times. Hendry has done nothing but spend money on overrated players at the end of their prime years. The minor league system has been void of top-notch prospects his entire miserable tenure with the Cubs. His scouts couldn't find a decent polish sausage in Chicago, let alone a quality prospect. I am a lifelong fan of this team, but I get tired of hearing ab...

The Tough Life of Chicago Cubs Fans

Ah, the plight of a Chicago Cubs fan. Each new season holds the reassuring promise that we will, once again make an emotional investment in a team that has the ability to bring us from the hopeful adrenaline rush of saying, 'Oh my God, I think this is really going to be the year,' to the bankrupt emptiness of watching another team, once again, achieve what we so badly want. It's almost like having a psychotic girlfriend or a drug addiction. We walk away, shaking our heads, telling ourselves, 'Never again,' only to be pulled back under the spell of the lovable losers, year after grueling year. This year though, we really did think it was going to be different, didn't we? One hundred years, that must count for something. Maybe on the one hundredth year, the curse would officially be broken. How long could it really last? I think the reason why we are so sorely disappointed is not because the Chicago Cubs are such horrible players. That would be much easier ...

Favorite Chicago Cubs Players

Listed below are a collection of Chicago Cubs players I have assembled that represent players that I have rooted for and have followed over the years. There isn't any particular order and there may be someone I have left off and a few that someone may wonder why they are on the list. That's ok, it's my list. Any Cub fan can make a list. There are 33 players on the list but there is no special reason for that number. The length of time the player was with the  Chicago Cubs  had a bearing but I didn't make it a rule in that regard. Just the longer they were just meant I had a longer time to see them play. I didn't try to pick positions. I was not trying to make a All Star team. Some may wonder why Bob Buhl is on the list. He probably doesn't match up well with some of the other pitchers on the list but there is something special to me about him. Any player that takes the time to come out to my first little league game of the season and speak to the 9-12 year...

Solving the Chicago Cubs World Series Drought

Anyone who was alive to see the last World Series victory by the Chicago Cubs was probably too young to remember it. The Cubs are now in their 102nd year drought of not winning the World Series. They made the NLCS in 2003 and were 5 outs away from going to the World Series against the Yankees. Well, as most Cubs fans now, this is when the famous Bartman incident occurred down the left field line when Alou went to make a catch near the bleachers and Steve Bartman reached over and deflected the ball. It all went down hill for them the rest of the game and they lost. Then the next game, Game 7, they lost as well. In 2008, hopes were high for the Cubs to finally win it all. Despite having one of the best teams in the the whole league they also had the "magic" of this has to be the year because it was the 100th year anniversary. Sadly, it was not the year. They were swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers and were completely embarrassed. The Cubs have the nickname of the "Lovable Lo...

When Chicago Cubs Rumors Go Overboard

We all know the Chicago Cubs. They are the team that plays for Chicago, Illinois and is less successful than the other team in their city, the White Sox. Even though the Cubs are known to be the 'Lovable Losers', they are still one of the oldest teams in the city. They continue to play not because they like to win. They do it because they love their city and they love their fans. However, the team still feels the pressure. Even if they have not won a championship for a hundred years, fans seem so be bummed when they have lost or their play did not go as well. Some fans take it to personally and this is where things get ugly. What I am talking about is the recent Chicago Cubs rumor about its team players receiving racial discrimination. It is one thing if it is done within the team. Fortunately, that is not the case. However, most of the discrimination comes from its fans. And this has led people like LaTroy Hawkins, Jacque Jones, Milton Bradley and Dusty Baker to leave the...

Chicago Cubs Pitcher Mark Prior Re-signs

After many trips through the rumor mill, Mark Prior accepted the Chicago Cubs' offer on January 27 to a one-year, $3.65 million contract. That is $900,000 more than the salary he would have earned under the contract he voided in November. Since Prior's definitive season in 2003 (18-6), he has cooled off somewhat, and has only managed to go 17-11 over the past two seasons. The Cubs were within five outs of reaching the World Series in 2003, due, in part, to Prior's performance. A sore elbow put him on the disabled list early last season, and when he entered the normal rotation again, he was hit on the same elbow by a scorching line drive. He finished the 2005 season going 11-7 with a 3.67 ERA over 27 games. The Chicago Cubs ' pitcher, whose name has been mentioned as possible trade bait this off-season, said that he was not too upset at the rumors because he figured they were just that -- rumors. Rumor had it that he was going to the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange f...

Chicago Cubs

The Chicago Cubs is a Major League Baseball team that is based in Chicago, Illinois. They are owned by the Tribune Company and managed by Lou Piniella, whereas John McDonough and Jim Hendry serve as its president and General Manager respectively. The Cubs and the Chicago White Sox are the two major league teams that are based in Chicago. Both of these clubs are the chartered members of their respective leagues. After the success of the Cincinnati Red Stockings, the first professional team ever in 1869 several openly professional teams appeared on the scene around 1870. Each team aimed at scoring a victory against the Red Stockings. Several teams adopted different colors and strategies. White was chosen by the Chicago Cubs . A professional league named as the National Association was formed around 1871. it was a first of its kind. Although the Cubs have seen some overall good seasons, they have failed to achieve the World Series championship title since 1908. In the 1984 NLCS, the...

Buffalo Sabres Jerseys - What I Know About the New Sabres Jerseys for the 2010-2011 NHL Season

Rejoice Sabres fans! On September 18th, 2010, the Buffalo Sabres are finally revealing their new jersey picks for the 2010-11 season - and I'd like to hear from one person who's sad about the departure of Buffa-slug! The eyesore will finally be gone FOREVER! They're switching last seasons throwback alternate jersey to home and the team will be wearing a white version of the new home jersey on the road. With that settled, we're dying to know what the new design is for the alternate jersey! All the speculative designs I've seen online have been extremely varied with no comment coming from the actual franchise. There's been a lot of talk about going back to the white and gold Buffalo script on a navy jersey with yellow stripes. Personal opinion - the design looks messy and amateur - like a confused baseball jersey. The stripes paired with script that looks undeniably baseball is awful and it would seriously offend me to see that on the ice. The inspiration for th...
