New York Jets Secure Wild Card in 2009
In an interesting turn of events, the New York Jets capped off an erratic whirlwind of a regular season with a happy ending. With a win against the Bengals, the Jets will now play them once again in the first round of the playoffs.
During their week 17 game, the team needed a win against the Cincinnati Bengals at their home stadium in New York Jets Jersey. It was expected that the Jets would win due to the fact that Cincy had already secured a number three seed and wouldn't see any benefit or damage to winning or losing. Therefore, they would rest their stars.
Still, many people were unsure as to whether the Jets could pull off their needed victory. After all, this was a season in which everything happened when it was seemingly least expected.
Let's start off with the beginning of the year. The team came off of a disappointing 2008 campaign that saw them fall just short of the playoffs after jumping out to an 8-3 start.
With a rookie quarterback in Mark Sanchez and a new head coach in Rex Ryan, there wasn't much reason to believe that expectations should be set high. Still, NY won its first three games of the year, including a huge game in New England against the rival Patriots.
Then, the team went on to drop five of its next six games, falling to a 4-6 record. At this time, it seemed like their chances were all but done at this point.
Once again came the unexpected. With some big wins, the team won five of its last regular season games, finishing off at 9-7 on the year.
While this wouldn't normally be a guarantee to make the playoffs, fate was on the Jets' side. The teams they needed to lose ended up losing some crucial games, while New York drew two opponents in the Colts and Bengals who decided not to play their stars.
The game against Indianapolis shocked the sports world. The team traveled to Indiana to face the 14-0 Colts, who appeared to be on the verge of completing an undefeated regular season at 16-0, a feat that had only taken place twice before.
To the surprise of just about everyone watching the game, Peyton Manning was pulled from the game after the first half because the Colts felt it would be wiser to rest him as a means of preventing injury. Because of this, the Jets quickly came from behind to win.
Things have been interesting all year, and next week's matchup at the Bengals should be no exception to the rule New York Jets.
